Re-enactment of Lafayette visit to Windsor

  • West Windsor Historical Society 1023 Vermont 44 Brownsville, VT, 05037 United States (map)

The Windsor and West Windsor Historical Societies are joining together to celebrate a Revolutionary War Hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, on the 200th anniversary of his last visit to Windsor, Vermont. President James Monroe and the Congress of the United States invited Lafayette to return to America 50 years after the convening of the first Continental Congress in 1774 to celebrate the success of the United States as a nation.  Lafayette's return visit in 1824 lasted 13 months during which time he visited all 24 states, traveled an estimated 5,000 miles, and was welcomed by cheering throngs all along the way.

On the morning of 28th of June, 2025 - exactly two hundred years after Lafayette’s visit to Windsor Vermont - plans are in the works to commemorate this historic visit with a reenactment of the events starting at 7:30am when Lafayette crossed the Connecticut River over the covered bridge from Cornish New Hampshire into Windsor Vermont.  The 1825 procession into Windsor was led by veterans of the war for independence and dignitaries gave speeches in the center of town, followed by a breakfast to celebrate the hero and prepare him for his day of travel through the state to Montpelier.

The American Friends of Lafayette has been celebrating Lafayette’s tour since 2024 and is furnishing a specialist re-enactor to play Lafayette as we re-create the event in Vermont. Windsor and West Windsor Historical Societies are looking for anyone interested in volunteering to make this event a success. lafayetteinwindsor@gmail.com
